Double Exposure

[S]hooting black and white film is part of my photography roots and on occasion, for the right kind of story, or when we are traveling to places that I see as nostalgic film stories, I will choose to photograph it this way.

We move very quickly here at the studio both physically and mentally; sometimes mistakes happen. I had run 1/2 a roll of film in Florence through the camera and then took it out, perhaps to switch with color film or a different ISO. I marked the canister but in the shuffle of travel the ink was partially rubbed off and not noticeable. It went back in the film fridge at the studio and then, most recently, packed with our Paris supplies. When I got the film back from the lab I realized what had happened!

But as I went through the scans, I began to fall in love with it – the tale of two cities overlapped, a look at our lives in the crazy frenzy of a frame, how these images mirror the overlapping memories in our mind and gives a true portrait of how our life moves around the world like ocean waves crashing one on top of the other…

  • oh these are just stunning!!! It’s like “a picture tells TWO thousand words” ha x

  • Nadia

Oh my! These are bellissimi!!! Would love to hang them up on my walls! And I love your perfect description of it..like ocean waves crashing one on top of the other…<3

  • There’s so much nostalgia oozing from these photos. Absolutely in love with them.

  • Dana Rose

Everything happens for a reason. These are fantastic, (even if you didn’t mean for it!) There is mystery in these photos. Sometimes I like to make up stories in my head of what a photo represents. For the one of you laying down reading the paper I feel like it is two people in love who are not in the same place but are waiting to see each other. Your waiting for Kevin and he is on his way. Romance at it’s finest <3

  • Even if you wanted to create these digitally it wouldn’t have the same emotion, what a wonderful series…they really capture the essence of the way you both work together (love the mirrored images of you and Kevin) and of all your travels. This feels so PURE.

    • I know! When I got the film back I was like WHOA, look at this… and then i took two unrelated images into photoshop to make a fake double exposure to see how I liked it and it wasn’t the same magic. Totally agree. Thanks sweets for the comment!

  • Marcela

I absolutely adore those photos! <3
Maybe someday I will be half as talented as you! 🙂

  • candace

    very cool.

  • beautiful mistakes.

  • Maria Araci d’Avila

    Fantastic!!!!!!!!

  • I love the way that you describe these as portraits illustrative of how quickly life moves. I love how these clearly show different memories and scenes and yet they are so fluid and seamless as though they weren’t happy accidents but rather a purposeful marriage of different moments in time that share the same feelings of love and nostalgia.

    • You couldn’t have written it more beautifully… Thanks doll.

  • TrishR

Wow. Is that a shot of you over a reversed shot of your husband?? that is amazing – possibly one of my favorites, and I’ve been a follower for a very long time. It gives me chills. Thanks for sharing. As I try to teach my young son – in art, there are no mistakes.

    • Thanks Trish for the comment. There are no rules in art and maybe it’s the “mistakes” that show us something new and open new thought…

  • Liz

These are absolutely gorgeous! You would think they are intentional by how beautifully they turned out! The combining of the city, you, and Kevin just make these so romantic.

It’s a marvelous mistake. It happens only in film and it’s a wonderful experience. Glad you liked these 😀 they’re stunning!
